Georgia - April 20-21, 2006

Spring 2006 (3 of 5) :

We were able to do several things in Georgia. We visited the little town of St Mary on the coast just over the border from Florida. We enjoyed lunch and a little walk at the seaside. Then we visited the submarine museum. Very very interesting. The US Navy have their strategic submarine base very near St Mary. This is where they base their North Atlantic Ohio Class Submarines (Trident boats).

Then we drove up to Savannah, Georgia. This is the site of the original colony in the Georgia - and the youngest of the colonies at the time of the war of independence. It was founded about 1723 or so. The city is beautiful. It's quite different from any other US City I've visited. There are no tall buildings, and the city has many tree filled squares and avenues. It's very nice. I can't think of anywhere in Europe like Savannah - it's really quite unique. A visit is highly recommended.

Again, we didn't have enough time to satisfy our interest before we had to drive on to Charleston, South Carolina - about 100 miles further up the coast.
