South Dakota - Thursday June 29, 2006

Summer Vacation 2006 (8 of 22) :

Our first day at Custer State Park was divided in two. In the morning, we had a walk to the top of "Lover's Leap" - a popular romantic suicide spot! In the afternoon we went to Hot Springs, SD where there are a couple of things to do. There's an archilogical site with Mammoth Remains. Very interesting. And there's "Evans Plunge" - an indoor Spa which uses the water from the hot springs of the city of 'Hot Springs, South Dakota'.

On the way to and from Hot Springs, we drove through more of Custer State Park. There are lots of buffalo roaming in the park. This is the first time we'd seen these magestic beasts.

Oh, give me a home
Where the buffalo roam
And the deer and the antelope play
.....

Buffalo used to roam the prairies and were a principal food source for the plains Indians. You'll remember this from the Kevin Costner Movie 'Dances with Wolves'. Sadly buffalo were hunted almost to extinction by Victorian Americans. I suppose they've been reintroduced and protected within Custer State Park and farmed a bit like sheep in Scotland.

There is a living show case/theme park with which Kevin Costner is involved and deals with buffalo . We didn't have time on this trip to visit that place - although it was well promoted in the tourist literature.
