Summer Vacation 2006 (1 of 22) :

We set off on a fantastic vacation to visit various places in the Western United States. We're travelling with the families Poje, Hazelwood and Johnsons and travelling by train.

The start of this adventure was Saurday June 24, 2006. Leaving from San Jose Railway Station on time at 7.38am and heading via Emmeryville, Sacramento, Reno (Nevada), Salt Lake City (Utah) to Glenwood Springs (Colorado). It's about 1000 miles and took 34 hours. The scenery is amazing.

The journey began with a hop across the Bay on a local train to Emmeryville where we joined the Zephyr. As the train travelled to Sacramento and on through the Sierras, we celebrated in style with Buck's Fizz - Champagne and Orange Juice. Followed by lunch and a little sleep. It took 12 hours to reach Reno - we could have driven there in less than half the time!

However in the morning we woke in Salt Lake City - no way could we have driven so far in a day. So the secret of the train is that it moves day and night - however it's never very fast. It's lots of fun.
