Eagle Cap Wilderness - September 6, 2008

Fall Trip 2008 (6 of 10) :

Lisa, Denise, Ali, Rich and I went for a hike in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Lisa's been involved with a business which does packing adventure holidays in the mountains around Halfway, Oregon. Lamas are used to pack the gear. No lamas today, however a very knowledgable and pleasant tour guide.

For me the hike was about the right length. We were 6.5 hours on the trail including a 30 minute stop for lunch. I think we did about 12 miles and probably climbed 2000-2500 feet. I didn't bring my GPS because I hadn't recharged it for a few days and knew it would give up long before the end of the hike. Battery life with the Forerunner 305 is an issue - 6 hours isn't much.

Anyway, Rich drove us all to the start of the hike and that probably took us to around 5000 feet above sea level. The views over the valleys and surrounding mountains were just great, and the weather was perfect. Not hot. Sunny, clear, some beautiful clouds. We walked to a little after the spring - probably about 4 miles and Ali and Denise headed back. Lisa, Denise and I then climbed to the summit of the mountain and did the scramble at the top - probably an extra 2 miles and 1000 foot climb. Well worth it. It's always nice to finish at the top!
