St Louis - September 6, 2011

Vacation Fall 2011 (6 of 12) :

Breathtaking

In 2002, I had an idea: Visit all 50 of the United States. 9 years later, we're finishing the job by visiting Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas. Today we're in St Louis, Missouri. We more-or-less finished the task in 2006 when our state count was 46. Like many projects, it takes 50% of the time to do the last 10%. Very pleased to finish the challenge. I became a US Citizen on 2011-07-28. Everything has come together.

St Louis is one the great Victorian Cities of the USA. It was acquired by the USA in the 1803 Lousiana Land Purchase and was the location from which Lewis and Clark set out to discover the route to the Pacific and begin Jefferson's Expansion Program. An idea was born in the 1930's to build something to celebrate Jefferson's vision of a continental nation from coast to coast. World War II intervened and in the 1960's the Gateway Arch was built. I studied Structural Engineering at University and this is possibly the most impressive structure I have ever seen. Incredible. Beautiful. Unique.
