Glasgow University Burns Supper

We attended a Burns Supper organized by Glasgow University at the University Club in Palo Alto. A very nice place to spend a lovely evening.

I don't know why we have never been to anything concerning Glasgow University since we left Scotland in 1977. Ali and I were married in the University Memorial Chapel. I have many happy memories of 4 years at Glasgow and great respect for the University. I studied Engineering which included tough stuff like structural engineering and thermodynamics. However there was also a diet of science, mathematics and computer science. A solid grounding for a career as a Software Engineer. My general education at Ardrossan Academy provided skills in English, Geography, Engineering Drawing and Typing. A Scottish Education is a good start in life!

Of course a dinner is not only an occasion for eating, drinking and speeches. It is also an opportunity to meet new folks and hear their stories. Ali and I were impressed by 4 Professors of Physics at Stanford who were classmates at Glasgow University in the 1950s. All together in Palo Alto and pushing at the frontiers of Physics for 50 years. Good Luck to you all.

Music was provided by the Peninsula Scottish Fiddlers, led by our good chums Shauna and Colyn. I didn't catch the name of the piper. The Burns Celebrations were conducted with wit by Clark McGinn - a World Famous Author and Burns Affectionado. The University was represented by Professor Fearn from the School of Mathematics. The occasion was organized by Emma Sloan, the International Development Officer. I'd like to say thank you to all those people and the staff of the University Club. Thanks also to the other guests from their company for the evening. Thank you very much.
