Finish

Western States (2 of 3) :

We arrived in the Stadium as finisher number 8 was arriving and we waited to see the first lady arrive.

Today was a day of cool conditions and it was expected that records would tumble. The Winner set a new course record of 14:45. That's an incredible pace of 8:50 mins/mile - my marathon pace. And that's over 100 miles and 18,000 feet of climbing (and 23,000 feet of descent). It's hard to believe.

The first lady home smashed the course record by 50 minutes. The previous record had stood for 18 years. An incredible run. Ellie is from Dundee, Scotland and lives in BC, Canada.

We were sorry to learn that our buddy Bill at the age of 77 had dropped at mile 50 (Devil's Thumb) having failed to make the cut-off. Bill was hoping to enter the record books as the oldest finisher. A fantastic effort Bill. Well done for trying.

I'm sure many other records were broken. A visit to the Western States Web Site will give you lots more information. Ali and I were staying in a hotel in Rocklin and arrived there about 11pm.
