Western States (1 of 3) :

It's three years since we last went to the Western States. We're no longer involved with the event and that gave us an opportunity to go and see some of the action. Western States is usually hot 90°F, or very hot 100+°F and today was cool - 70°F. Perfect conditions for course records.

We arrived in Foresthill at lunch-time and walked to the river crossing between Bath Road and Michigan Bluff. It's a walk of about 3 miles each way. We were at the river crossing when the winner arrived and we saw the first 15 runners come by. We were very careful to keep out of their way.

Later on we went to Rucky Chucky where they cross the American river. They were using boats while we were there. An upstream dam had been adjusted to ensure lower water in the evening so that most of the runners could wade across on foot.

Then we went to the Stadium for the finish.
