Oamaru, New Zealand

After an amazing stay at Kaikoura with Jan and Doug, it was decided on Thursday 12 January that our next destination should be Oamaru on the Otago Coast.

We had lunch in Dunsandel. I'm sure most Kiwi folks have never heard of this village of 400 people. It's about 100km South of Christchurch and Highway-1. It would be easy to miss. However we stopped, looked and liked what we saw. I was especially interested in the changes to the railway between 1927 and 2017. Without steam, it's much reduced and more efficient. One day, I'd like to ride the rails of New Zealand.

The Canterbury Plain must be one of the most productive farm lands in the world. It's flanked by the Ocean to the East and irrigated by the beautiful Mountains to the West. There's a marked change in landscape after Timaru as we entered the Otago Region of South Island and reached our destination at Oamaru.

As we crossed the Canterbury Plain, I said to Alison "We've left the Wild West of New Zealand". By "Wild West", I mean the Victorian Gold Mining regions in the Mountains. Oamaru is most certainly a Victorian Gold Mining kind of place. Lots of impressive old buildings, a boat harbour for sailors, and a Penguin Colony for Nature Lovers. South Island is a very beautiful place. I was so impressed with the Victorian buildings, that we spend a couple of hours on Friday morning walking and taking photos: click here.

Before closing the diary for today, I have to again mention the awesome hospitality of Jan and Doug. They fed and entertained us since Sunday afternoon. The time has gone in a flash. Thank You so much. It's been so fantastic to come to visit you. We've had such amazing hospitality on this trip. All our hosts in India, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand have shown us such warmth and kindness. We love you all and hope you'll visit us in England. It'll be our privilege to return your hospitality.
