Westport, New Zealand

On Saturday January 7, we drove "Great Coastal Road" from Greymouth to Westport. This is one of the greatest ocean highway drives on the planet. It joins Highway-1 in California, 101 in Oregon and Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

Great Coastal Road is very sparsely populated. We stopped at the visitor centre and Blowholes at Punakaiki. Another NZ Pie for lunch and a beautiful walk along the bluffs. The ocean and vegetation are beautiful. There are "adventure" activities in this area such as kayaking in the river and mountain trails for runners and walkers.

We checked into a motel in Westport and went to explore the lighthouse and seal sanctuary at Cape Foulwind - a very well named spot. Judging from the height of the surf on a Summer's Day, I guess the winter surf from the Southern Ocean must be formidable. There are a few houses with spectacular views of the ocean. Quadruple glazing recommended!
