Box Hill

We had a very nice day out in the Surrey Hills. We joined a meetup lead by Gavin. He lead a walk in May at Epsom Race Course. Today's walk was from the village of Betchworth to Brockham and return. The walk is overlooked by Box Hill about 2 miles to the North. I'll confess, I'd never heard of either of those places! Gavin is a very good walk leader and has interesting stories to share along the route. It was a gentle level walk of about 4 miles. Weather was mostly cloudy, sunny at times and about 22°C.

Surrey Hills is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. When I was a leader in the Scouts, I frequently went to the County Campground at Bently Copse near Shere. And various conservation weekends near Dorking, and many camps at Elstead. However, I hadn't done much hiking here until we retired. Such a lot of beautiful villages, with mill ponds, cricket greens, churches and pubs. This is picture postcard England. Beautiful. It could also be called an Area of Oustandingly Expensive Houses!

The walk started and finished at The Dolphin Pub beside St Michael's Church in Betchworth. This was one of the Churches in the movie "Four Weddings and a Funeral". When we arrived at 2pm, I heard the organ being beautifully played by a virtuoso. At the end of the walk I learned that there was an organ recital/concert at 4pm in the Church.

After the walk, we drove to Box Hill to admire the view of the terrain we had covered. We descended from Box Hill on the "Zig Zag Road" which was used for the Road Climb in the London 2012 Olympics.

I'll finish by saying how much we enjoyed the afternoon and to thank Gavin for organising the walk. For sure, we want to explore many more trails in this area. It's nice to be retired in England.
