When we left Allendale, we were heading for Rutland to visit our friends David and Gill. As we agreed to arrive in Rutland about 4pm, we had 3 hours to spare en route. George Washington's family came from Washington in County Durham and the family home is open to the public. We also visited "The Angel of the North" in Gateshead and had a short walk in the Cathedral City of Durham.
Washington Hall has very beautiful gardens. 4 quite different gardens occupy a site of about one acre. The Nuttery is the largest and most impressive garden, however the formal garden, play area and terrace are also beautiful. We had a cake and coffee for lunch in the Cafe.
I don't think I can say anything to augment the photos of "The Angel" or the walk along the River Wear in Durham. Durham's a very nice city and I expect we'll stay overnight one day.
