We had a wonderful visit to California. So many great friends and places to see in beautiful sunshine. I don't want to single out anything for "the best bit" because it was all really good.
We arrived on Sunday 22 October from Houston, TX. I can't believe how well we know the USA. 2000+ miles from HOU to LAX to SJC. Whenever we looked out the window, we knew where we were. Every step of the way over Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
David met us and took us to Napa to a very nice resort. The fires which had destroyed 2000 homes around Santa Rosa earlier in the month had gone out. No smoke. Clear blue skies. Perfect.
On Thursday we met one of my open source friends from Armenia who was on business in the States. He came to Silicon Valley to meet us and we showed him round.
We stayed with our friends Jim and Sandy for a long weekend. We visited Adobe on Friday, had a run-walk-breakfast on Saturday and had dinner with Jill and Mike. We had dinner with Michelle and family on Sunday. On Monday, Alison met old friends for lunch and I visited another open-source chum who lives in Morgan Hill. We had dinner with Rob and Hazel and in the evening, we went to the Scottish Country dancing. Phew, that's a lot in a weekend.
Tuesday was Halloween. The American obsession with this "holiday" has always bemused me. We had brunch with Gary and Nancy and dinner with Shauna and Drew in Montara where the whole village endulges in a spectacular spook and ghost show.
Wednesday we had lunch with Ansel and Barbara whole live in the same street as Shauna. Incredible Coincidence as they don't know each other! We headed back to Silicon Valley for dinner with Robert and Geri.
On Thursday, we had lunch with Freddie and Sue and then headed to Doug and Carol's in the foothills of the Sierras. We relaxed and stayed with them for a couple of days. Had a lovely walk in the forest and talked about how nice it is to be retired.
On Saturday we headed to Oakland to Tracy and Sig's. On Sunday we met the Moore family for lunch in Oakland and Tam and family in Fremont.
On Monday, Alison and I enjoyed lunch in Mill Valley and a drive around the Marin Headlands with great views of Golden Gate. We met Jim and Sandy again in the airport in the evening. They were heading off to Australia at the same time that we were flying to London. We got home, totally exhausted on Tuesday afternoon 7 November .
To all our wonderful friends in United States we offer an open and sincere invitation. Please come to visit us in England and let us return your hospitality. We can't promise the weather of the Golden State, however we can assure you of a wonderful welcome and great scenery in the beautiful County of Surrey. Welcome. Please come.
