At seven in the morning the sun’s shiny, scrubbed face is beaming benevolently down on us. Not a cloud in the sky. We have coffee together then hold hands and wish each other good-bye, safe travel and blessings on all of us (and on our furry friends in the bush).
We leave together and hitting Hwy 1 Rex turns north to Surfers and we hang a left south. The parting’s a bit sad, tempered by the knowledge we’ll get together again down south. Rex and Anne are friends with savoir vivre, relaxed generosity and great sense of humour. Ruth and I coffee-up at the port city of Maclean after crossing the grand Clarence River. In the late afternoon, tired of driving, we turn off to check out Nambucca Heads.
Gentle reader, if you are ever heading up the east coast of Australia, get off the freeway at any point and I guarantee you will find a jewel of a place on the coast. Nambucca Heads is one of these.
We book into the Miramar facility located behind a H – U – G - E services club. After checking in we amble along the boardwalk to the White Albatross complex at the mouth of the river where a couple of aperitifs are downed. The setting sun colours the mangroves, the river, the beach and the hills. Love this place – will prop here for awhile.
Dinner at the services club consists of grilled chicken for Ruth and grilled fish for me.
