Miwok 100km Endurance Run

One of my favorite events is the Miwok 100k Endurance Run which takes place on the first weekend of May. The Miwok Trail goes from Golden Gate Recreation Area to a few miles north of Stinson Beech. It's a challenging 100km run with more than 10,000 feet of elevation gain. The event is run by Tia Boddington, whom I'm proud to call my friend. The Marin Headlands and Golden Gate Recreation Area are a paradise for walkers and runners. The beautiful views over San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean are quite breaktaking.

Striders had 4 athletes running this year. Jean, Charles and Peggy were using it as a training run in their preparations for Western States at the end of June. Penny ran for fun! Tom, Roger and Robin were pacing and Agnes and Ali were crewing. All four Striders finished in great style. I'm especially proud of Peggy's 12:53 finish which is perfect performance and preparation for her first ever Western States at the end of June.

Ali and I went up to the Event on Friday and stayed in Mill Valley. I was up at 3:30am in order to be at the start for 4:00pm to help with the traffic and parking before the race began at 5:40. Mariana gave me a lift to the Pan Toll aid station. On the way, we stopped at Golden Gate to watch the sun rise. A cruise ship sailed below Golden Gate as the sun rose over the East Bay Hills above Berkeley. Incredibly beautiful.

I spent the day at the aid station at Pan Toll and enjoyed the fun company of Mariana and Shirley. The runners pass through at mile 21 going north and again at mile 49 going south. Penny returned to Pan Toll about 4pm and I ran 13 miles with her to the finish. She finished in 13:35 - 13 minutes better than last year and a very good performance as her health has limited her training recently. Well done, Penny.

Congratulations to everybody. Thanks to Tia and the team for staging the event. Great company, perfect weather, gorgeous trail, awesome scenery. A day out in paradise!

And coming up....

The future is looking fine. I'm now working part-time at Adobe. I work 3 days a week. This has only been in operation for a couple of weeks and we haven't settled to a regular work pattern. The aim is to work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and have a long run on Thursday and Friday morning when I'm not in the office. And on those afternoons, I'm hoping to do some volunteer work. Perhaps at a museum, theatre or medical non-profit around San Jose.

We've planned a vacation in England in July to visit the family. As well as visiting the folks in Surrey, we're going to have a week in Cornwall with Alan, Jen and Holly. And we'll be joined by Jen's folks Colin and Sue. The visit to England will be followed by two weeks travelling in the mid west of the USA to visit 7 more states in that region.

We're also planning a trip to Europe for the Christmas Holidays. In addition to spending Christmas Day with the family, we're planning a vacation in Lanzarote with our Finnish friend Veli-Veikko. VV's been asking us for about 20 years to join him for a warm island vacation at New Year and now we're finally going to do this.

Next year I have been with Adobe for 10 years and so I'll have a 3 week sabbatical in addition to my 6 weeks of regular vacation. A trip to China and India is one idea, New Zealand's another possibility, however long overdue return visits to Australia and Scotland must also be considered. And there's the family in England of course. Well, we'll see.
