On Vacation in England

Ali and I are having a very enjoyable summer vacation. This year's vacation will be in two parts. Firstly, a trip to England to visit our family. And then we'll have a tour of the mid-west to visit family and friends in Ohio, Indiana and Minnesota. We'll also visit some other states to bring our state count to 46 - we'll soon have been to them all.

The highlight of the trip to England is of course to get to know our beautiful grand-daughter Holly. Holly's coming up for her first birthday on August 21 and has grown hugely since I visited her last September when she was only a couple of weeks old. She's really charming. Her father Alan was a beautiful baby and Holly reminds Ali and I very much of Alan at the same age. She's also got the same peaceful and calm nature. She's a delight to be with. She has a lovely smile and laugh and hardly ever cries.

She isn't camera shy, however I seldom seem to get shots of her at her best. About ½ a second before I press the button, she always moves, grimaces, ducks - or something to spoil the shot. Oh well - it's a good excuse to take more photos.

We've all gone on vacation to Cornwall. So there are 7 of us. Alan, Jen and Holly. Jen's parents Sue and Colin are with us. And of course Ali and I. Jamie (our younger son) and his girl-friend Adele came at the weekend - however they returned home on Sunday night to go to work. That's a pity, however we'll stay with them for a few days before we return to the USA.

I've got to say, the weather is not good at all. It's rained every day - and it has been raining heavily and for long periods of time. I heard on the radio that England had its wettest June since records began 100 years ago. Who says there's no such thing as global climate change? How come we establish new records every year? The USA is getting hotter, California's getting dryer. England's getting wetter.

And coming up....

We're planning a trip to Europe for the Christmas Holidays. In addition to spending Christmas Day with the family, we're planning a vacation in Lanzarote with our Finnish friend Veli-Veikko. VV's been asking us for about 20 years to join him for a warm island vacation at New Year and now we're finally going to do this.

Next year I have been with Adobe for 10 years and so I'll have a 3 week sabbatical in addition to my 6 weeks of regular vacation. A trip to China and India is one idea, New Zealand's another possibility, however long overdue return visits to Australia and Scotland must also be considered. And there's the family in England of course. Well, we'll see.
