Dieting & Helping Others

I have totally changed my diet and eating habits. In July 2002, I decided that at 204lbs and 5' 8", it was time to get some weight off. I set myself a target of 154lbs (50 pounds off). I was astonished to achieve this in 13 hard-walking weeks (up to 100 miles/week).

I've been very motivated by the amazing support of my family and my colleagues at Adobe. Thank you everybody. Here's the invitation to the party to thank everybody. And (sadly), I've written a poem as part of the printed invitation sent to the guests for the party.

I feel just great and the compliments I've received about my appearance have been just awesome. I've lost weight and it's going to stay off.

I made up my own program, by inspiration. However there are quite sophisticated programs such as:

Anyway, here's my program:

  • Exercise:
    JoinTeam-in-Training (The Leukemia Society)
Train to walk in the Hawaii marathon
I don't want to run - it's hard on the knees and joints.
  • Eat and drink:
    - less meat, dairy products
    - more salad and fruit
    - almost no wine or beer. No soda.
    - NOT a starvation diet
  • Sponsorship:
Thanks to the generosity of my colleagues at Adobe, my family & friends and the Adobe gift matching program, I've been sponsored for $5000 for the Leukemia Society. It's amazing how generous people can be - and its very motivating to have so many people supporting me to achieve this goal.
  • Public (no escape from the plan):
Publish my progress on my web site, and report progress weekly to the team at Adobe
  • Maintaining my new weight:
To ensure the weight stays off, I'll update my weight every month on this web site, and I'll pay the Leukemia Society $25/lb for every pound I've gained in any year on the anniversary of the marathon

Here's the plan and progress:
